Experiential Strategies for Working with Adolescents with Eating Disorders - Part 5 - The Importance of Connecting Experiential and Spiritual Interventions In the Treatment of Adolescents with Eating Disorders

Wednesday, March 4, 2009: 4:00 PM-5:15 PM
Barcelona/Casablanca (Westin Long Beach)
Adolescents struggle with the maturity and developmental wisdom necessary to battle eating disorders with vigor and to approach treatment in collaborative engagement with the clinician. Two ways to approach this difficulty is with experiential interventions, helping move patients towards recovery by circumventing resistance, and spiritual interventions, bringing the adolescent back to deeper beliefs, desires, and motives to engage the hard work of treatment. Participants will learn how to better understand the importance of experiential intervention, spiritual intervention, and a blending of these for the client's benefit. This workshop will be didactic, practical, and experiential. Active participation will be invited.

This workshop will be geared to clinicians who work with adolescents, and who are willing to learn about both experiential approaches and spiritual interventions with adolescents, including interventions for adolescents which are both spiritual in nature and experiential. Participants will learn about the developmental and basic needs of adolescents, the basic maturational needs of adolescent females suffering from eating disorders, and how to implement interventions according to basic needs.Participants will be invited to learn how to help adolescents explore, assess, define, and embrace their own spiritual beliefs and  to utilize those spiritual beliefs in the recovery process. Participants will be asked to do some experiential activities in the workshop which can increase self awareness and can be personally uplifting. As a group in the workshop, we will engage in some interventions personally, which will give first hand understanding of how the intervention is implemented and the potential effect of interventions on the client.
