Making Sense of the Complex Eating Disorder: A Multifaceted Conversation with Founding Leaders in the Treatment of Eating Disorders

Background: iaedp has gathered five foundational leaders with a combined 160+ years of experience in the field of eating disorders to participate in a multifaceted conversation on the industry’s past, present and future. Conversations will cover nutrition, medical and psychiatric care, psychological treatments, and diverse populations among other current topics.

Objectives: 1. Current “hot topics” within the field of eating disorders. 2. Current treatment trends within the field of eating disorders. 3. The need for professionals to retain open minds and be less polarized for the overall advancements needed in the field of eating disorder treatment.

  1. Moderated by a member of the iaedp Certification Committee.
  2. an accumulation of 50 industry wide questions for the moderator to choose from covering a multitude of topics related to the eating disorder treatment industry.
  3. a broad and in-depth conversation on each question will be facilitated by the Moderator. 

The health care industry is a fluid environment challenging providers to remain current in their chosen discipline as well as the treatment and financial resources available to patients. What was determined as a standard of care five or ten years ago may not remain valid within today’s market. Eating Disorder treatment requires a multifaceted approach with a multidisciplinary team. Aligning the necessary resources with the current Managed Care structures and the Affordable Care Act is complex. No less challenging for the treatment providers is gaining a daily compliance of patients to engage the treatment regimen necessary to find hope and save their lives.

In iaedp’s commitment to further meaningful conversations covering challenging topics, this select group of interdisciplinary professionals, founding leaders who have influenced the eating disorder fields over decades of practice, will be provided an opportunity to speak on current topics facing the industry today. The panel is comprised of Craig Johnson PhD, FAED, CEDS, Philip Mehler MD, FAED, CEDS, Margo Maine PhD, FAED, CEDS, Sondra Kronberg, MS, RD, CEDRD and Beth Harman McGilley PhD, FAED. CEDS. The conversation will cover a multitude of facets within the treatment industry including nutrition, medical care, psychiatric care, psychological treatments, levels of care, access to care, diverse populations, managed care, provider care and, most of all, the struggles of those affected by eating disorders. In this discourse, this esteemed panel may include aspects of these topics from a past, present and future perspectives in order to provide foundations of where the provisions of care have been along with insights as to where treatment industry may go. With their accumulated history of nearly 160 years in day to day patient care, their vast accomplishments including hundreds of vital research articles, numerous books on a variety of related matters, involvement in the establishment of leader organizations such as the AED, NEDA and iaedp, this is a “must attend” event for any professional within the eating disorder field. This event will be a one-of-a-kind, content rich forum for eating disorder professionals to learn from true industry masters.

Presenters:
Craig Johnson, PhD, FAED, CEDS

Dr. Johnson is entering his 39th year of treatment and research in the field of eating disorders. He currently serves as Chief Science Officer at Eating Recovery Center and is a Professor of Clinical Psychiatry at the University of Oklahoma College of Medicine. He formerly held faculty appointments at the University of Chicago and Northwestern Medical Schools and was Founder and Director of the Eating Disorders Program at Laureate Psychiatric Hospital. He was Founding Editor of the International Journal of Eating Disorders and Founder of the Academy of Eating Disorders. He was also Co-Founder and Past President of the National Eating Disorders Association. Dr Johnson has authored over 90 scientific articles and 3 books.



, Philip S. Mehler, MD, FACP, FAED, CEDS

Philip Mehler, as Executive Medical Director and Chief Medical Officer, is the head of medical services across Eating Recovery Center’s (ERC) National treatment spectrum at all levels of care. Prior to ERC, he served as Medical Director-Denver Health and Hospital Authority. While at Denver Health for 30 years, he founded ACUTE and continues as its Executive Medical Director. Dr. Mehler has conducted research into optimal treatment of severe cases of anorexia and bulimia, authoring 400 publications, including Medical Complications of Eating Disorders now in its third edition. He is the recipient of the 2012 Outstanding Clinician Award (AED) and recognized among the “Best Doctors in America” for 20 consecutive years. He is the Glassman Professor of Medicine at the University of Colorado.



, Margo Maine, PhD, FAED, CEDS

A Founder and Adviser of the National Eating Disorders Association and Founding Fellow of the Academy for Eating Disorders, Maine is author of: Pursuing Perfection: Eating Disorders, Body Myths, and Women at Midlife and Beyond; Treatment of Eating Disorders: Bridging the Research- Practice Gap; Effective Clinical Practice in the Treatment of Eating Disorders; The Body Myth; Father Hunger; and Body Wars. The recipient of The Lori Irving Award for Excellence in Eating Disorders Awareness and Prevention, and of the NEDA Lifetime Achievement Award, and 2016 Honoree of the Connecticut Women’s Hall of Fame, she practices in West Hartford, CT.



, Sondra Kronberg, MS, RD, CEDRD

Sondra Kronberg, MS, RD, CEDRD, Executive Director Eating Disorder Treatment Collaborative/F.E.E.D. IOP, Connect and Concierge Programs and recognized leader in the field of eating disorders with 30 years experience. Awarded NEDA 2004 Excellence in Treatment, ADA SCAN 2002 Excellence in Practice, and iaedp 2010 Honorary Certified Eating Disorder Registered Dietitian (CEDRD). Author of Eating Disorder Learning/Teaching Handout Series. Contributing author to Eating Disorders Clinical Guide to Counseling and Treatment. Specializing in training, supervision, and treatment of the collaborative treatment approach. Presents at national conferences, appears regularly on TV/media, is a NEDA spokesperson, and Advisory Board member of Monte Nido & Affiliates.



and Beth McGilley, PhD, FAED, CEDS

Beth Hartman McGilley, PhD, FAED, CEDS, Associate Professor, UKSM-W, is a psychologist in private practice, specializing in the treatment of eating disorders, body image, athletes, trauma, and grief. She has practiced for over 30 years, writing, lecturing, supervising, directing an inpatient eating disorders program and providing individual, family and group therapy. She co-edited Treatment of Eating Disorders: Bridging the Science-Practice Gap, and has published in academic journals and the popular media, as well as contributing chapters to several books. She is an emeritus editor for Eating Disorders: The Journal of Treatment and Prevention, and is working on her second book, a tribute to the patients she’s served over the course of her career.
