PRE-CERTIFICATION COURSE 2 - Treatment Modalities for Eating Disorders

Background: Effective treatment modalities for clients with eating disorders include both evidence-based methods which have been used over the years, and cutting edge modalities. The full range of therapy modalities will be discussed and their specific use in treating eating disorder patients will be examined.

Objectives: Participants will be able to: 1. identify numerous therapeutic modalities used in the treatment of eating disorders. 2. recognize common co-morbidities that influence treatment 3. discuss the development and treatment of eating disorders within special populations 4. identify and address common ethical considerations for treatment teams when working with special population 5. explain the theory behind utilizing the presented treatment methods and demonstrate ways in which the presented methods are used with clients.

Treatment Modalities for Eating Disorders will address the most effective treatment methods for clinicians new to the profession, or for those wanting to learn more. Topics discussed include coordination and collaboration within treatment teams, assessment tools including suicide screening and safety measures, and diagnosis and treatment planning (including case conceptualization, goals and objectives) for all levels of care for each eating disorder diagnosis. Evidence based treatments, motivational approaches and emerging therapies currently in practice and under empirical review will be presented, using case studies to demonstrate therapeutic practices.

A Founder and Adviser of the National Eating Disorders Association and Founding Fellow of the Academy for Eating Disorders, Maine is author of: Pursuing Perfection: Eating Disorders, Body Myths, and Women at Midlife and Beyond; Treatment of Eating Disorders: Bridging the Research- Practice Gap; Effective Clinical Practice in the Treatment of Eating Disorders; The Body Myth; Father Hunger; and Body Wars. The recipient of The Lori Irving Award for Excellence in Eating Disorders Awareness and Prevention, and of the NEDA Lifetime Achievement Award, and 2016 Honoree of the Connecticut Women’s Hall of Fame, she practices in West Hartford, CT.

Beth McGilley, PhD, FAED, CEDS

Beth Hartman McGilley, PhD, FAED, CEDS, Associate Professor, UKSM-W, is a psychologist in private practice, specializing in the treatment of eating disorders, body image, athletes, trauma, and grief. She has practiced for over 30 years, writing, lecturing, supervising, directing an inpatient eating disorders program and providing individual, family and group therapy. She co-edited Treatment of Eating Disorders: Bridging the Science-Practice Gap, and has published in academic journals and the popular media, as well as contributing chapters to several books. She is an emeritus editor for Eating Disorders: The Journal of Treatment and Prevention, and is working on her second book, a tribute to the patients she’s served over the course of her career.



and Kari Wolfe Anderson, DBH, CEDS

Dr. Kari Anderson, LPC, CEDS has been treating eating disorders for 25 years, with emphasis on Binge Eating Disorder. She is President and Chief Clinical Director for Green Mountain at Fox Run’s Women's Center for Binge and Emotional Eating in Ludlow, Vermont. She earned her Doctorate of Behavioral Health in 2012 from Arizona State University researching effective Binge Eating Disorder treatment. Kari is the co-author of the acclaimed book, Eat What You Love, Love What You Eat for Binge Eating: A Mindful Eating Program for Healing Your Relationship with Food and Your Body. She serves on the iaedp Certification Committee.
