Treatment protocols for eating disorders have transformed throughout the years.  Nutrition and eating interventions have changed dramatically.  This workshop will focus on insights, awareness, and practical exercises that demonstrate the progression of the role of the nutritionist in the treatment of eating disorders.  IAEDP’s creation of the CEDRD credential has helped develop criteria for knowledge and training for nutrition professionals on the treatment team, as well as emphasized the importance of the role of the nutritionist.  As standards of care have evolved to include a continuum of care that bridges residential treatment, day treatment programs, intensive and outpatient programs so too has the role of the nutrition therapist changed.  Nutritionists treating eating disorders must be armed with strategies and therapeutic skills that will address behavioral mechanisms that result from eating disorder risk factors such as depression, anxiety, OCD, borderline personality, impulse and addiction disorders that filter into food, weight, and body eating disorder behaviors.  Treatment programs today are more tailored to the specific emotional and eating needs of the patient and many different approaches for eating support, supervision, and meal coaching have resulted.  The role of the nutrition therapist, which originally was to deliver didactic information and be a person for accountability, has expanded to include activities crucial to the recovery process such as eating, cooking, shopping and outings with patients while developing a strong therapeutic relationship. This workshop will discuss where we’ve been, where we are and where we are going.  Sondra will share her 30 years of experience as an innovator of the many current nutrition therapies.  She will also discuss nutrition therapy implications for special populations including orthorexia, over-exercisers, ARFID, adult sufferers and males.  This workshop will demonstrate how nutrition professionals in the field of eating disorders, past, present and future, have tailored treatment and counseling strategies to the changes in the field, including using the newest technology and experiential approaches. It will also highlight case discussion, practical discussion, and tools to take home.
