From Buddha to Brain Scans: The Integration of Science, Psychotherapy, and Spirituality

Background: Neuroscience is the new buzz word in the world of psychotherapy, yet how does one distinguish between true innovation and mere speculation? Bringing years of experience, a wealth of knowledge, and engaging presence Carolyn Costin and Joan Borysenko will share their insights on the integration of science, psychotherapy and spirituality.

After a brief overview and introduction, Carolyn Costin will discuss the most recent findings in neuroscience and mindfulness, followed by an indepth discussion between Carolyn and Joan  Borysenko, PhD. Discussion will center on the latest science and mindfulness around eating disorder treatment and how to incorporate these concepts within the therapeutic setting. Both will share how they utilize these concepts in their practices. Audience questions and challenges will be encouraged. Finally audience members will be able to ask questions or present cases where they are stuck for feedback from each of the presenters viewpoints.

Brain research can inform therapeutic strategies but it can also be difficult to translate into useful practices.  Bringing years of experience, a wealth of knowledge, and their engaging presence  two experts in their field,  Carolyn Costin, eating disorder specialist and Joan Borysenko, world renowned for her work  in mind/body connection, will share their insights on the integration of science, psychotherapy and spirituality.  From their own personal transformations to their years of dedication to helping others, both speakers bring insight, passion and humor as they help audiences put the latest in neuroscience into action covering topics such as;  the brain,  body image, eating disorders, addiction,  mindfulness, and more. Carolyn will show excerpts of actual therapy sessions, for a "behind closed doors" look at the interaction between therapist and client, providing glimpses into the simple explanation of complex ideas.

Carolyn Costin, MFt, MA, MEd, CEDS

Carolyn Costin is a specialist in treating eating disorders with her own recovery and over 30 years of experience. She is the Founder and Executive Director of Monte Nido and Affiliates. Her books, The Eating Disorder Source Book, 100 Questions and Answers About Eating Disorders, Your Dieting Daughter, and her newest, 8 Keys to Recovery, have helped professionals and the lay public in understanding, treating and preventing eating disorders. Carolyn is an activist in her field and is involved in several organizations. In addition, Carolyn serves on the editorial board for Eating Disorders: The Journal of Treatment and Prevention.
