Background: Young children with anorexia nervosa are not miniaturized teens; they have their own, highly variable presentation and course of illness. Learning to recognize the atypical presentation in young children and distinguish these from similar eating disorders, such as food phobia, can make the difference between normal growth and irreversible stunting.

Eating disorders in children is a unique field that requires the collaboration of families, medical and mental health experts. In what way do very young children differ from older children, teens and young adults, in presentation, treatment and outcome? What role does medication play in this age group? This presentation will provide an overview of eating disorders in children, followed by case studies illustrating the course of treatment, Kartini family-based style, in three young children with eating disorders.

Naghmeh Moshtael, MD

Naghmeh Moshtael,MD, is a pediatrician and medical director at the Kartini Clinic, in Portland, Oregon. She is member of AED, IAEDP, and AAP. Along with the rest of the staff at Kartini Clinic, Dr. Moshtael specializes in pediatric eating disorders, and thus diagnosed and treated over 2,000 children and adolescents, since 1998 to present.

Jayotta Feimoefiafi, LCSW

Jayotta Feimoefiafi LCSW is a group and Day Treatment Unit milieu therapist at Kartini Clinic. She has been a therapist in the Portland Community for the last 12 years. Along with the rest of the staff at Kartini Clinic, Jayotta Feimoefiafi specializes in pediatric eating disorders and thus has diagnosed and treated over 2,000 children and adolescents, since 1998 to present.



and Jade Buchanan, LCSW

Jade Buchanan, LCSW is a milieu therapist and clinical director at Kartini Clinic. She is the lead milieu therapist for the college age day treatment unit. She is a member of AED and CREDN. Along with the rest of the staff at Kartini Clinic, Jade Buchanan specializes in pediatric eating disorders and thus and has diagnosed and treated over 2,000 children and adolescents, since 1998 to present.
