Background: Learn the basic neurobiology of trauma and the brain mechanisms involved in accessing, shifting, and adaptively resolving traumata. Expose participants to a number of "window of tolerance" techniques. A comprehensive review of the adaptive information processing system and the EMDR 8 phase protocol will be demonstrated through patient videos.

Evidence shows that trauma is not a frontal lobe issue, but a right brain issue flooding the limibic system and assaulting individuals with paralyzing emotions, sensations, and self-referencing beliefs. This workshop will expose participants to the psychotherapy of EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) one of the many right brained therapies available to adaptively resolve and assist in the digestion of complex trauma issues including comorbid diagnoses of eating disorders. A review of the recent literature in the mechanisms and application of bilateral stimulation (BLS) will be presented as well as several studies after 9/11 indicating the benefits and importance of right brained therapy treatment for trauma survivors and related disorders. Case examples demonstrating the adaptive information processing system (AIP) and the eight phase protocol will be discussed and patient video tapes will unfold an actual EMDR session from start to finish unveiling the process. Participants will witness memory defragmentation, shifting disturbance from implicit to explicit memory, and adaptive resolution of a sexual assault case that directly influenced the onset of a patient eating disorder. Additionally, participants will learn practical "window of tolerance" skills to use within their own practice to assist their patients with safety, grounding, and anxiety reduction for trauma processing.
