III.   Program concludes with introduction of the members of iaedp‘s International Relations Committee and its Mission Statement.

Researchers and practitioners in the field of eating disorders have long since recognized that eating disorders affect a culturally diverse population globally, rather than simply a population of young, white, middle-class females.  While all mental illnesses can present treatment challenges inherent in addressing ethnically diverse populations, these challenges are especially difficult with regard to eating disorders, given the wide variation in cultural values, rituals, practices, and norms concerning food and body experience.

Sensitivity to cultural nuances in terms of clinical presentation and symptomatology as well as underlying issues is required in order to provide appropriate, effective treatment. Greater flexibility with regard to standard treatment practices may be necessary, given the differences in cultural mores and differences in the core symptoms presented.

This 90 minute panel presentation, by members of iaedp’s International Relations Committee (IRC), is designed to raise the level of professional awareness and sensitivity regarding the wide variety of cultural norms and specific issues that impact the etiology and treatment of eating disorders. The goal is for professionals treating eating disorders to question and explore their own cultural assumptions and expand their world view on effective therapeutic modalities for culturally relevant groups. An introduction by Ovidio Bermudez will be followed the panel moderator and Forum Chair Suzanne Ricklin, who will provide a frame and overview of the 2012 International Forum lunchtime program. An overview of some of the cultural treatment challenges encountered by clinicians and researchers - as well as those related to specific cultures - will be presented: 1) Exploring our presumptions with ethnically diverse clients and families with eating disorders by Divya Kakaiya 2) The cross cultural variations of eating disorders in Latin America by Eva Trujillo 3) The anecdotal rise of eating disorders in Jamaica and the Caribbean, in contrast to the past embracing of a voluptuous female body type by Caryl James 4) The challenges presented regarding the use of assertive communication in Asian (Japanese, Chinese, Korean) cultures by Anita Johnston.
