Addressing Therapeutic Roadblocks in Clients with Binge Eating Disorder and Obesity with Integrative Therapies

Saturday, March 24, 2012: 2:30 PM-4:00 PM
Crystal A (The Charleston Marriott)
This workshop discusses complex factors contributing to binge eating disorder (BED) and obesity including acute and chronic stress, sensitivity to food cues and the effects of comfort foods on the pleasure response in the brain. Specific integrative strategies will be discussed that address the neurobiological causes of BED and obesity.

      I.         Binge eating disorder (BED) and obesity – similarities and differences

II.         Neurobiology of binge eating disorder and obesity – the dopamine reward circuitry and the D2 gene

III.         Appetite, palatable foods and BED and obesity

  1. Reinforcing qualities of palatable foods
  2. Brain stress and binging, stress and emotional eating

   IV.         Stress and sleep –

  1. Effect on metabolism
  2. Effect on eating behaviors
  3. Effect on weight

     V.         Nutritional issues in BED and obesity

  1. Nutrient deficiencies
  2. Food allergies
  3. Leaky gut syndrome

VI.         Specific Therapeutic Roadblocks and integrative therapies to address

  1. Brain reward circuitry and food cravings
  2. The brain-gut: satiation and satisfaction
  3. The neurobiology of body hatred
  4. Exercise for brain stress
  5. Psychiatric comorbidity and BED and Obesity

 VII.         Experiential exercises

  1. Zero balancing demonstration for stress reduction
  2. Guided imagery
  3. Yoga asanas to reduce health risks and promote body contentment
  4. Breathwork
Binge eating disorder and obesity are more common than other forms of eating disorders and newer studies including brain scans point to the importance of understanding the neurobiology of the brain as part of the etiology for these common disorders.   Clients with binge eating and obesity can continue to struggle with changing their behaviors, body image and their relationship with food despite being motivated to do so.    This workshop will discuss specific integrative strategies that can be used to help clients develop an understanding of the root causes of their behavior, discuss ways to support and enhance brain reward circuitry, identify the individual patterns that can trigger relapse and make the changes they need to reduce improve treatment and reduce relapse risk.
