Working with adolescents can be challenging and rewarding. In an eating disorder, adolescents may struggle to find the voice to express feelings. Furthermore, eating disorders are characterized by disconnectedness; adolescents especially may struggle to integrate thoughts, feelings and actions. This workshop explores reasons why adolescents may find it difficult to share the feelings associated with choices made in the eating disorder. The presenter will lay the foundation of sound nutrition principles utilizing evidence-based practice standards. This includes discussion of treatment approach, nutrition philosophy and The Remuda Model as used in the Remuda Programs for Eating and Anxiety Disorders. To illustrate the Remuda Model, specific nutrition experientials will be presented in detail. Audience will understand scope and purpose of these experientials that may be used in individual or small group settings. These experientials foster open dialogue and increase awareness of the mind, body and spirit connection. Handouts will provide examples of lesson plan and sample questions to facilitate group discussion. Additionally, the presenter will highlight special interest topics for adolescents including internet sites and treatment interventions for specific developmental stages. Finally, audience members will have opportunity for a question and answer session.
