Introducing The Gerwe Orchestration Method, A Psychodynamic Approach to Treating Eating Disorders

Saturday, March 24, 2012: 4:30 PM-6:00 PM
Crystal Ballroom (The Charleston Marriott)
G-OM was designed to identify and address past intense to extreme experiences that have led to persistent preoccupations, obsessive/compulsive tendencies, fluctuating mood changes, and elevated levels of emotional distress temporarily alleviated by maladaptive patterns of behavior and/or addictive disorders. G-OM treats core elements and current functioning achieving effective results.
This presentation introduces a structured psychodynamic method of treating the underlying dynamics of eating disorders basedon 30 years of research and clinical practice. The method is presented using the DSM-IV five axes and ASAM six dimensions as the structure for doing an assessment of risk and treatment planning that includes incorporation of best practices.
The Gerwe Orchestration Method (G-OM) group therapy approach blends cognitive behavioral therapy and psychodynamic approaches to target dysfunctional addictive behaviors that originated during pivotal developmental experiences and continued to evolve through repetition and linkage with the addictive disorders. The Orchestration Group Process (OGP) is the cornerstone of G-OM and provides a method to better understand the relationship of current disorders and previous pivotal life experiences. The OGP approach has been successfully integrated into eating disorder group therapy in a variety of settings with or without the full use of the other components of the G-OM method, including intensive outpatient, military, and criminal justice settings. This presentation describes and illustrates the OGP method and its historical roots.
