Designed to meet the ethics course requirements for IAEDP certification, this workshop will begin with a discussion of the basics of professional ethics and then address typical ethical dilemmas and past ethical dilemmas faced by eating disorders professionals. The workshop will include both large group and small group discussions.

Ethical practice as it relates to the treatment of eating disorders will use brief lectures, large group discussions, and small group discussions to improve participants' understanding of (a) professional ethical codes, licensure requirements, and state regulations; (b) informed consent, confidentiality, and multiple relationships; and (c) the guidelines for determining a best course of action when faced with an ethical dilemma, as they all relate to eating disorders practice.  After a brief overview of ethical practice, the presenter will engage participants in a discussion of typical and past ethical dilemmas faced by practitioners in the eating disorder field.  it is the goal of the presentation to meet the ethics course requirements for IAEDP certification and to improve the understanding of and increase the appreciation for ethical practice in the eating disorder field.
Primary Presenter:
Susan L. Renes, PhD, CEDS, CPP, CRPS, CCDC

Dr. Renes started working in the field of eating disorders in 1984. She worked as a therapist, both in-patient and out-patient treatment facilities and maintained a private practice for twelve years. From 2000 to 2007, Sue also worked in the public school system addressing eating disorders and substance abuse prevention programs and collaborated with Dr. Christopher Ringwalt on school-based prevention research projects. In 2007, Sue joined the faculty at University of Alaska Fairbanks in the Counseling Department of the School of Education. Her most recent peer-reviewed publication is titled "Understanding and Aiding Couples Affected by an Eating Disorder".
